I value Grit; a distinct combination of passion, resilience, determination, and focus that allows me to maintain the discipline and optimism to persevere in my goals even in the face of discomfort, rejection, and a lack of visible progress.
When I interview candidates for my Marketing team I ask myself "What does this candidate look like when weathering a storm? It’s inevitable. The economy will suffer one day, a headline will force a dip somewhere – what happens when things are out of our control and we have to claw our way across the finish line?
Grit is not responsiveness, though we need to be – it’s being proactive. It’s not kindness, it’s collaboration. It’s not meeting expectations, it’s exceeding them. It’s not saying okay, it’s debating for better results.
